"I don't think we could have done anything differently," senior Tiffany Dawson said. "We were very prepared, everyone played really well, and we all put everything we had on the court."
The Warhawks finished the season with a school-record 21 wins and nine losses. The team also won the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship before making its first appearance ever at nationals.
While the Warhawks got swept in the opening round by the Golden Gusties, the team kept the competition close in its doubles matches. The No. 1 doubles team of freshman Lauren Fahl and senior Tiffany Dawson lost 8-5 to ?Jenn White and Sierra Krebsbach, while sophomores Ingrid Stensvaag and Michelle Daciolas were defeated, 8-5, at No. 2 doubles by Samantha Frank and Ali O'Neal. Freshman Amy Siemon and junior Brittany Gering also struggled at No. 3 doubles, as they lost 8-4 to Gustavus Adolphus College's Laura Arnebeck and Jenny Arnfelt.
After dropping all three doubles matches, the Warhawks needed to take five out of six singles matches to beat the Gusties but were unable to pull through in the end.
"We were close in doubles and could have won all three doubles matches, but we lost the big points and let them come back," Dawson said.
Health was also an issue, as junior Kara Amundson sprained her ankle Friday.
The 'Hawks finished the regular season ranked No. 29 in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll for Division III women's tennis.
While the season may be over, the Warhawks are already looking forward to next year.
"Everyone is very satisfied with the whole season," Dawson said. "Because our team is so young, I think the experience of going to nationals will help the team a lot next year. I think they will be in the running for the championships."
