Students minoring in leadership or military science are required to take a three-credit history course. Only three classes are available to possibly fulfill the requirement, but all three are not offered for next semester.
"Students can get a wavier for those classes," said Maj. Michael Nyenhuis, assistant professor of military science. "It's not stopping a student from getting a minor in leadership."
According to the UW-Whitewater course catalog students need to take either History 390, 391 or LDRSHP 401. Some of these classes go through the history department, which is currently changing some things.
"The department is rebuilding," said Mary Pinkerton, dean of the College of Letters and Sciences. "We're shifting a bit away from military and moving more social and cultural."
The biggest issue that caused this situation was the pending retirement of Professor Richard Haney.
"I think it is unfortunate and will negatively impact the Military Science Department for a short term," Nyenhuis said.
Haney taught military history classes at UW-Whitewater for many years and even taught military history at the United States Military Academy at West Point.
However, other ways for students to fulfill their history requirement are available.
"We have one student who will be taking military history classes at UW-Oshkosh during the summer and transferring the credits in the fall," Nyenhuis said.

I find it a shame that the uw-whitewater history department finds the three classes that have military history unnecessary. To me it seems as though they are taking an almost anti-war standpoint by not teaching these classes which represent a significant portion of our history. (Continued…)

Military science is a bunch of bull. UWW needs to stop recognizing that brain washing as a proper career choice... this is a step in a good direction finally. (Continued…)

I agree with A Student, if the military/government wants to offer classes, let them do it on their own land. We dont need more propaganda classes that tell you the right and wrong side of a battle with a pro-war agenda. (Continued…)
