Former Warhawk Justin Beaver survived a hectic Green Bay Packers rookie tryout camp, but is waiting on a phone call from the team to sign him as a free agent.

The Packers had room for four free agents, and the team has signed three of the 19 players it brought to the tryouts. Only one spot remains according to NFL roster rules.

The NFL rules only allow for an 80-man roster, but the NFL spring owner meeting will consider increasing the roster limit to 86 players. The increase would give Beaver, who helped the Warhawks gain a national championship title, an added chance.

"I don't know when I will find out for sure," Beaver said in an interview Monday. "I think when they know, I'll know. I would guess it would be the next couple of days, but I'm not sure."

Although the Packers signed the three free agents, Beaver, the 2007 Gagliardi Trophy recipient, made an impression on Packers head coach Mike McCarthy.

"He's been very impressive," McCarthy said during a May 4 news conference. "He's done a very nice job. He plays with a lot of energy, very quick, explosive. As far as, does he have a shot, that's something actually we'll discuss when we get back upstairs. But I would love for him to have an opportunity, because he's been impressive."

Beaver said the tryouts kept him busy, and he didn't have time to do anything else except what was on the Packers schedule.

"It was really hectic, but at the same time, it was fun," he said. "Pretty much left everything back at the hotel and went to practices, meetings, and dinners. We got back to the hotel late at night and studied, and got up in the morning to do it all again."

Competition is a lot harder at the NFL level then it is at the collegiate level. Beaver has been training in Waukesha at NX Level in order to prepare for the NFL tryouts.

Beaver said his training helped him for the camp because he avoided being physically tired, allowing him to focus on the competition.

Anytime you get to that level, they are all going to be good, and they are all going to be fighting for their livelihood and the position in the NFL," Beaver said.

Meanwhile, former Warhawks backup quarterback Brian Ryczkowski has been named the starting quarterback for the Milwaukee Bonecrushers, a team in the Continental Indoor Football League. The team is 0-7.

Ryczkowski made his Bonecrushers debut during the third quarter last Wednesday against the Saginaw Sting football team in Saginaw, Mich. He threw for 113 yards and one touchdown with no interceptions, a news release on www.warhawksfootball.com said. After the game, he was told he would be the starting quarterback on Friday against the New Jersey Revolution.

"We have a lot of work to do," he said. "Hopefully we'll get our first win this weekend."
