According to a press release from UW-Whitewater's Marketing and Media Relations department, heat and hot water are expected to remain offline in all campus buildings until at least Thursday.
Heat and hot water were slated to be restored by Sunday or Monday, but because repairing the damages in the power plant is taking more time than expected, students in the residence halls will have to wait longer before living conditions return to normal. The press release said repairs could be delayed further by additional complications at the work site.
A backup boiler in the campus power plant behind Esker Dining Hall exploded Wednesday, which damaged a main valve for the university's steam system.
For students living in the residence halls, hot showers are available at the Athletic Services Building near Perkins Stadium on a schedule basis. Hours for next week have not yet been released.
Esker will not reopen until at least Monday because asbestos was found near the building's intake vents. While air quality in the dining hall was clean, the vents must be cleaned also. The cleanup process will continue throughout the weekend, and air quality will be tested again before Esker reopens.
