The AIDS epidemic strikes Africa daily, and through UW-Whitewater's Recreation Programming and Leadership class students will soon have a chance to strike back.
The class, a part of the recreation minor degree program, is planning Strike Out AIDS to Spare Lives, a bowling fundraiser to heighten awareness about the perpetually prevalent epidemic.
The event is nothing new to Professor Karen Barack, who teaches Recreation 334, as students in her classes have been planning an event a semester for the last thirteen years.
"This is an opportunity for these students to learn about what goes into designing and planning a program," Barack said. "The purpose is to build students skills as recreational programmers."
Every student in the class created their own proposal as to what sort of event they would plan, students then discussed all of the options and voted John Schmidt's "Strike Out AIDS to Spare Lives" as their event.
"I think that [student's program choice] says a lot for them being global citizens," Barack said.
Colin Steinke, class chair for the event, believes strongly in the event and its goals.
"As a school, to do a silly, fun thing to enable other people to live and have opportunities to not come down with a life threatening disease is the least we can do," Steinke said.
In the thirteen years of the programs this will be the first that has raised money for an organization. Money raised from the event will go to ONE, an organization formed to raise public awareness for issues of global poverty including the AIDS epidemic according to ONE.org.
The event will be held April 29 in the University Centers recreation center, tentatively scheduled to run from 6 p.m to midnight. The bowling will feature a tournament for team and individual performances as well as an individual recreation only option. The singles tournament entry fee is $7 per bowler, the team entry fee is $15 per team, and individual recreation is $5 per bowler.
Prizes will be awarded to the winners of both tournaments and door prizes will also be distributed throughout the event.
Interested parties can pick up forms to register for the event at the recreation sports office in the Williams Center. E-mail felterhe30@uww.edu for more information on registration.
