Greeks receive much deserved representation
Letter to the editor
Issue date: 3/19/08 Section: Opinion
I am writing to commend the work of Regina Shirkey in her article "Fraternities, sororities provide social structure for shy students." Not only was her article insightful and well written, but she also investigated a subject that the Royal Purple has appeared to avoid in the past. Being an Alumnus of the Greek community (graduated spring 2006), I have always felt that the Royal Purple had a negative view of Greeks but this article has made me think twice about that. As with many large organizations, negative news regarding fraternities and sororities is much more publicized than positive subjects. The volunteer work done by members of the Greek community is done for the sole purpose of helping those in need, not to advertise "We raised XX pounds of food this year, or $$ for this charity" (although those members in charge of philanthropy will be happy to tell you how much has been raised). Unfortunately, an article about a Greek chapter in trouble seems to be much more interesting than a piece on their charitable contributions.
Members of the Greek community work hard to refute the negative stereotypes, and it is very rewarding to see someone in a public media position support the positive roles these organizations can play.
