The loss against the Pointers dropped UW-Whitewater back into a tie for first place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with UW-Eau Claire. The Blugolds are the only other team besides UW-Stevens Point to have beaten the Warhawks.
Coming off a strong win against UW-Platteville on Feb. 13, the Warhawks looked to repeat in its performance on the road against the Pointers. Head Coach Keri Carollo said playing a quality opponent away from home was crucial preparation for her team.
"[It] is really important getting on the road and playing a good team like UW-Stevens Point," Carollo said.
With the Pointers up 27-25 at halftime, the 'Hawks were forced to change things up a bit. Sophomore Heidi Sonntag started the second half strong with a layup, tying the game at 27-27.
However, UW-Stevens Point promptly ripped off a 13-4 run, and led 40-31 five minutes into the second half. The 'Hawks responded with a 13-3 run to close the gap to 46-45. UW-Whitewater would tie the game again at 62-62 at the 1:27 mark, but Pointers' guard Haley Houghton hit a jumper to put her team up by two. The 'Hawks had two more chances to tie the game, but were unable to do so.
Leading the Warhawks was junior center Tiffany Morton, who posted a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds. UW-Whitewater also received a solid offensive contribution from junior guard Rachel Woolever, who added 11 points off the bench.
Carollo said she enjoys having a team where she's able to put a few different combinations of players on the court.
"[It] says a lot about the depth of our team," Carollo said. "[We] can play at least 10 or 11 deep … it is really important for foul trouble."
After the game against UW-Oshkosh, the women return to Whitewater Saturday to host UW-River Falls at 1 p.m. in the Kachel Gymnasium.
