Freshman Brooke Bell and junior Danielle Anton led the Warhawk women's track and field team to a third-place finish in the Warhawk Classic Saturday afternoon.
Bell placed first in the 200-meter dash and second in the 55-meter dash with times of 25.63 and 7.41 seconds, respectively. Anton won the pentathlon with 2,994 points, just 28 points shy of the school record. Anton's point total qualifies her to participate in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference indoor championship.
"It was a good meet, but I was bummed I was so close [to the school record]," Anton said. "Those little points were lost in the two inches I could have made in the high jump, or running two seconds faster in the 800. When you think of how close you were … it bums you out."
The team has a lot of areas to improve on to catch up to teams such as UW-La Crosse, who won the event.
"It was a good meet and a bad meet at the same time," Anton said. "We got to really focus on small things, and since it was not really a big meet we had the coaches' attention and really focused on what we needed to work on."
Anton was one of three Warhawk athletes to perform in multiple events on Saturday, including the triple jump, a competition she has never done before.
"It was kind of an experiment meet, [so] I'm not going to base our team off of this weekend because not everyone was doing their specialized events," Anton said.
Other top performers included a trio of freshmen. Jessa Luebke placed fourth in the shot put, Sara Poppe was third in the triple jump and Megan Morehart finished eighth in the 55-meter hurdles.
Seniors Jenny Rogers and Ashley Pick, who were both honored during the meet, also contributed with a sixth-place finish in the 5,000 meters and a third-place finish in the mile, respectively.
"The difference this year is that we not only just have one person who is performing great and scoring points … we have quite a few people," Anton said. "If we can all support each other, stay healthy and keep training like we are, we will do great at our conference meet."
The Warhawks will compete in a quadrangular meet hosted by UW-Madison Saturday.
