Penn originally decided to adapt Jon Krakauer's classic novel "Into the Wild" almost 10 years ago. His persistence in acquiring the rights to the story and the blessing of the family of the late Chris McCandless paid off. Penn worked his butt off, and the film received only two nominations.
#2 "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" for Best Picture
In most cases, if a film's director gets nominated for Best Director, chances are the film will be up for Best Picture. However, the french 'Bell' was forgotten for both Best Picture and Best Foreign Film.
#3 "300" for best special effects How does a movie that is,
essentially, 90 percent brilliant special effects and still convincing not
receive a nomination? The film was good but not the most amazing thing every produced, but that obviously shouldn't matter; look at the other nominees: "Golden Compass," "Transformers," and "Pirates 3."
Best of the rest:
#4 - Best original score for "There Will Be Blood"
#5 - Ben Foster in "3:10 to Yuma"
#6 - Ed Harris in "Gone Baby Gone"
2008 Woodie Awards
