The student-run newspaper's Feb. 13 issue was recognized for general excellence among various college newspapers from 12 different states.
News Editor Sarah Kloepping also received a third place Best News Story award for her article, "Controversial literature handed out from church" in the same issue. The article covered anti-homosexuality brochures passed out on parts of campus by the Pilgrims Covenant Church.
"Getting the individual award was an honor, but I'm more proud of the Royal Purple receiving third place for Best of Show because it's a reflection of our newspaper and the staff as a whole," Kloepping said.
The Royal Purple also received the second place General Excellence award at the Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation's 2007 Better Newspaper and Advertising Contest Feb. 1.
Former Managing Editor Tabatha Wethal said she wasn't surprised, but proud the newspaper continued its award-winning tradition.
"I've seen a lot of hard work go into [the Royal Purple] and now it's reaping the benefits," Wethal said. "A lot of the positive accolades are also due to [adviser] Sam Martino ... he really put in an effort to recruit a talented staff. He took [the newspaper] under his wing and it has taken off."
Columbia College in Chicago received first place for Best of Show and Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn. received second place.
