The Warhawk women's basketball team remained on top of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with an 83-72 defeat of the UW-Stout Blue Devils Saturday night in Menomonie.

UW-Whitewater's victory snapped the Blue Devils' four-game winning streak and pushed its overall record to 20-1 this season.

Having not swept the UW-Stout Blue Devils since the 1994-95 season, Head Coach Keri Carollo said the game was extremely important to her team.

"It was a great game, especially for our three seniors," Carollo said.

The Warhawks led UW-Stout for much of the first half, as its defense held the Blue Devils to just 31 percent shooting from the field. While the 'Hawks entered halftime ahead 35-29, Carollo said her team needed to stay positive and continue to find the open shots.

"We needed to get back on transition," Carollo said. "[UW-Stout] is a very up tempo team, [and] not giving them second and third opportunities was key."

In the second half, the Warhawks led by as much as 17 points, but due to the team's 22 turnovers, the lead was consistently around 10.

The Warhawks' starting five accounted for 67 of the team's 83 points. Junior Tiffany Morton led the Warhawks with 26 points and 15 rebounds. Also, sophomore Heidi Sonntag and senior Lindsey Beuchner both added 16 points.

In a game that involved a staggering 56 fouls, a few players were forced to step up. Sonnntag said one of the reasons she performed well was because of her teammates feeding her the ball.

"With some players in foul trouble, I knew that I needed to do whatever it would take to help the team win," Sonntag said. "My teammates were finding me and giving me some great open looks, [and] I was able to knock [them] down."

While being ranked No. 3 in the D3Hoops.com poll since Jan. 21, Carollo said she is pleased with her team's consistency during its six-game winning streak.

"Winning on the road is huge," Carollo said. "[It] is always a challenge to win away from home, especially in the WIAC."

The Warhawks will try to defend its first place spot in the WIAC tonight, as the team hosts the UW-Platteville Pioneers at 7 p.m.
