While Mother Nature iced Whitewater with more snow Saturday night, junior guard Matt Goodwin and the rest of the UW-Whitewater men's basketball team stayed warm in Menomonie by notching another important conference win.

Goodwin broke his previous career-high in points, as he scored 33 and nailed eight 3-pointers to lead the 'Hawks to a 83-61 win over the Blue Devils.

Junior forward Kori Vernon also had a career night, compiling 22 points. Vernon's total against UW-Stout broke his previous best of 21 points, a record set just last week against UW-Eau Claire.

"In [Saturday] night's game we started off kind of slow, but we were able to pick up the defensive intensity, which leads to easy baskets for us," Vernon said. "When our defense is intense, everyone feeds off that and is looking for each other.

I just happened to be in the right places at the right time. It was all a team effort."

Vernon also grabbed a game-high seven rebounds. Sophomore point guard Kevin Koski also tied a career best with 10 assists, the same amount he had earlier this season against UW-Stout.

Blue Devil freshman forward Eric Hostetter led UW-Stout with 13 points, while senior guard Miles Webb had 10.

Coming out of halftime, UW-Whitewater ran away with the game, as the team went up 62-41 only nine minutes into the second half.

While classes were cancelled at UW-Whitewater last Wednesday, the 'Hawks were able to continue, as they traveled to Decorah, Iowa, for a non-conference match up against the Luther College Norse. Senior guard Myles McKay posted 19 points and Goodwin tacked on 16 to lead UW-Whitewater to a 68-53 win.

The 'Hawks were able to hold Norse senior guard Austin Bildsteinn, who came in averaging 13 points per game, to only five as the team came away with a 13-point win.

UW-Whitewater is now ranked fourth in the D3Hoops.com poll, with a 10-2 record in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and an overall record of 18-3.

With only four games left in the regular season, Vernon is relying on practice and a business-like approach to help the team finish the regular season strong.

"Everyone is gunning for you when you are at the top. So we go into each game like it is our last and we leave it all on the floor," Vernon said.

UW-Whitewater will battle for first place in the WIAC tonight at 7 p.m., when the men travel to face UW-Platteville. Along with the 'Hawks, UW-Platteville is 10-2 in the WIAC.
