After suffering its first loss of the season on Jan. 19, the Warhawk wheelchair basketball team showed the loss had been forgotten, as the team posted a 4-0 record last weekend to move to 18-1 overall.
The 'Hawks defeated the University of Arizona Wildcats, 67-31; the University of Alabama Crimson Tide, 81-29; and the University of Texas-Arlington Movin' Mavs, 78-50, on Friday.
Senior Joe Chambers led UW-Whitewater against the Wildcats, scoring 21 points and crashing the boards for 12 rebounds in the win. Sophomore Nate Hinze carried the 'Hawks by scoring 21 against the Crimson Tide, and senior Jeremy Campbell recorded a double-double, notching 18 points while delivering 10 assists against the Movin' Mavs.
The team concluded its road trip with a 78-43 win against the University of Missouri Tigers Saturday. Hinze and graduate student Jay Baker led the way for the victory in leading scorer Matt Scott's absence. Hinze posted his own double-double, scoring a whopping 33 points and 12 rebounds. Baker matched Hinze's double-double with one of his own, as he scored 19 points and grabbed 14 rebounds against the Tigers.
Head Coach Tracy Chynoweth said the team was ready mentally for the games after losing to the University of Illinois.
"It's always interesting to see how a team bounces back after a loss," Chynoweth said. "I was anxious to see how we would prepare mentally, how we would execute on the offensive end of the floor and to see if we could set a tone defensively. We did all of these things well and we're looking forward to seeing Illinois again in two weeks."
Senior Matt Scott said the team played in unity with more consistency.
"We were a more cohesive unit this weekend," Scott said. "Everyone made personal sacrifices for the betterment of the team. If we play our game with intelligence and work hard to execute we will have a victorious outcome."
The Warhawks will play four games Feb. 15 and 16 in Champaign, Ill., including a rematch against the University of Illinois Fighting Illini on Feb. 16. The Fighting Illini handed the Warhawks its only loss earlier this year.
