Former candidate clarifies position
Letter to the editor
Issue date: 2/6/08 Section: Opinion
After reading the article "Candidate drops out in Common Council election," I was glad to see that the Royal Purple is interested in covering the upcoming Common Council primaries. Although appreciative, I feel as if I had miscommunicated a few key points of my platform. The article read that I want to preserve the rights of students to dispute violations of codes. Not only do I want to defend these rights for students, but for the entire Whitewater population as well. I don't agree with the Housing Task Force committees' decision to advocate a legal loophole to bypass the right of due process. In addition, it is disappointing to return home from Afghanistan, enroll in UW-Whitewater and have certain restrictions placed upon residence and occupancy options.
Another topic that was touched on was the fact that I see a need for "better" jobs in Whitewater. What I mean by better is jobs which are fulfilling, rewarding, and employee orientated. I recognize that Whitewater has great potential of drawing in upcoming business for several reasons. First is our location; we are a small pleasant city within 30 miles of three interstates. We are a short drive to Madison, Milwaukee and Chicago. Also, we have one the best business schools in the region with a multi-million dollar building being erected to solidify the states' commitment to the program. I see little reason why this city can not attract favorable businesses that will compliment our citizens.
