Whitewater's annual Freeze Fest has added a new event to the agenda Saturday, the Polar Plunge.

The Polar Plunge, an fundraiser involving jumping into a hole in a frozen lake, has raised more than $6 million for the Special Olympics during the past 10 years, according to the Special Olympics Web site.

Dave Polacek, the event's coordinator, said more than 100 people have registered online, but the total number of participants will increase when the paper registration forms are formally counted.

Saturday's Plunge will be the second for UW-Whitewater student, Tiffany Johnson.

"I did the Polar Plunge in Wausau in 2005," she said. "Believe me, it's quite the rush."

Other activities at Freeze Fest include a kid's fishing derby, a quilt show, horse-drawn wagon rides and the opening of the Whitewater Historical Society Depot Museum.

The Kiwanis Club will also host a pancake breakfast from 6:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. in the Armory building. The cost is $6 at the door, with kids preschool age and younger eating for free.

Whitewater is the 10th location in Wisconsin to host a Polar Plunge event.
