The Royal Purple continued its award-winning tradition last Friday when it was honored with the second place General Excellence award at the Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation's 2007 Better Newspaper and Advertising Contest.

The foundation recognized the student-run newspaper for its outstanding production, timely and relevant news, and attractive, "dignified" layout and design. The Clarion from Madison Area Technical Colleges took first place in the General Excellence category, while UW-Green Bay's The Fourth Estate placed third.

"I was ecstatic, but not surprised, to hear that the Royal Purple was named one of the top two papers in the state," Kevin Hoffman, former Royal Purple editor-in-chief, said. "I personally witnessed this staff spend countless hours working diligently to ensure that they publish a paper this university can be proud of, and it's great to see them finally get the recognition they deserve. I have no doubt that within the next couple years the Royal Purple will become the top paper in the state."

The award was one of many the newspaper received. Former Graphics Editor Megan Gardner took third place for graphics, Assistant Sports Editor Matt Cullen placed second for his football article, "Extended effort seizes victory" and former Managing Editor Tabatha Wethal received an honorable mention for her feature "Is it a porn nation?"

In addition to the awards, Royal Purple news editor Sarah Kloepping, of Green Bay, was one of three scholarship recipients, earning $1,500 to continue her journalism education at UW-Whitewater.

"This scholarship will not only help with the financial aspects of college, but it encourages me to know that WNA supports my education," Kloepping said.

Kloepping, a sophomore, is a journalism major. She has worked for the Green Bay Press-Gazette since her junior year of high school, and started at the Royal Purple in September 2007.

"Working as an editor on the Royal Purple has pushed my journalistic abilities," she said. "Covering breaking news and learning page layout has prepared me for life in a real newsroom."
