Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. chapter Lambda Xi held a free facial and massage event last Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Heyer room 324, where members gave facials and had professionally-guided chair massages.
"I did not know there was going to be this many people," Alpha Kappa Alpha President Patrice England said. "I thought it was very beneficial. You can take these tips home with you."
The purpose of facial and massage night was health awareness, AKA Assistant Secretary Laura Holloway said.
AKA members gave facials to female and male participants. Several members of AKA made natural face masks, which they researched how to make. There were three to choose from: avocado and honey, banana and honey, and oatmeal.
Holloway, a senior psychology major, and fellow AKA secretary, senior Hayley Castro, said it was fun to make the masks.
Castro, a sociology major, was proud of her homemade avocado mask.
"This is beautiful," she said. "I picked out the avocados with love."
The facial masks were a definite success to freshman Ansaar Gandy, an international business major.
"I'm going to go get the materials and do it at home," he said.
The focus within AKA is promoting the black family, health education and unity within women and college students, Holloway said.
AKA does several events a year. This semester they have Apollo Night, where they find talent on campus and have a competition, and the Mr. Pink and Green pageant.
About a half hour into the event, Marilyn Kile, Ambrose Health Center director, arrived to lead the participants through guided chair massages.
"It's important for all humans to be touched in a way that's positive and nurturing," Kile said.
Sophomore Anthony White, a physical education major, found the massages especially rewarding.
"Some of my soreness went away from working out every day," White said.
Massages are offered to students and faculty through University Health and Counseling Services.
