Suncerrae "Sunne" Perry was crowned the winner and awarded a $250 check from the Fraternity of Alpha Phi Alpha, which assists with the financial obligations associated with their studies.
On Feb. 3 The Miss Black and Gold Scholarship Pageant started at 6:30 p.m. Before the pageant started everything was looked over. All the decorations were brought in, and after a brief waiting period the lights were dimmed. Everything went hush, and then the dimmed stillness came to life as the pageant began.
The judging for this competition is based on a point system. There is a maximum of 125 points possible.
"I thought the Miss Black and Gold pageant was just so nice," Perry said. "And how it portrayed African American women in a positive image and just taught you to stand high."
Breana Holmes, Ashley Moore and Quaina Thomas also compteted. Breana is a 19-year-old majoring in psychology, Suncerrae is 21 years old and majoring in secondary education, Ashley is the same age and majoring in business management, Quaina is a 20-year-old and is majoring in graphic design and advertisement.
Perry had a lot of support during the whole process of getting involved with the pageant and straight on through until the end from her family and friends. She also said she had heard only good things about this competition and how she had friends that participated in this competition, so she decided to give it a try.
"Be yourself and do your best, because you're representing women from all over," Perry said.
Friendships within the pageant were formed and many of the girls mentioned how they would still remain friends after this competition. All the girls were always there for one another and Perry said the usual thoughts of pageants and how one usually pictures a bunch of beauty queens being catty towards one another was no where near the case in this competition.
Now that Sunne has this title she will be required to compete in a state competition where, if she does well, continues onto a national competition where she will represent the Fraternity of Alpha Phi Alpha and women everywhere.
