Not only has the new University Center brought a number of restaurants, an art gallery, new student organization centers and gathering areas, it also has a new, large auditorium.

The large screen, HD projector and Blu-ray player provide the perfect components for a UW-Whitewater on-campus movie theater.

Student Entertainment Awarness League is sponsoring movies every Friday and Saturday that will play in the auditorium, which is located downstairs behind the Down Under in UC 76. Friday showings are at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. Saturday showings are at 4 p.m., 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. The 4 p.m. showing on Saturdays is closed captioned. The movies are a $1 with a valid student ID and $3 without an ID.

"Transformers" will be playing on Feb. 8 and 9, "The Heartbreak Kid" will play Feb. 15 and 16, and "Glory Road" will show as a tribute to Black History month on Feb. 22 and 23.

"The theater nights cater to students taste in movies and will bring them together," SEAL Entertainment Intern Mike Baumhardt said. "The auditorium has a central location on campus and is accessible to all students. It provides entertainment students can count on during the weekends and can make a difference if they leave or go home for the weekend. The auditorium will bring students together."

"Being able to have a place on campus to show movies or a better quality screen for a low admission is my favorite part," Baumhardt said.

Popcorn, candy and other concessions can be purchased outside the theater. SEAL plans to have promotions with free popcorn and to show more recent movies before they are released on DVD.

Other events that the auditorium will be hosting can be found on the events calendar on the UW-Whitewater Web site. Events include a benefit concert on Feb. 22 sponsored by the Optimist Club, an All-Greek Meeting on Feb. 25 sponsored by Leadership Development, and weekly AMA meetings.

The auditorium is different than other meeting rooms in the UC because of the new high-tech features.

"The auditorium features a larger projection screen than the other rooms," production and technical coordinator Jay Craigs said. "The screen is a HD, high resolution screen that has a Blu-ray player."

"In the past, the projection screens were of lower quality and HD was not an option," Craigs said. "The weekly film series in high resolution is a great opportunity for students."

The auditorium projection screen and seating is ideal for speakers, presentations and large group meetings.

The auditorium, which can hold up to 232 people, is accessible to all students and can be rented by any student organization by visiting the reservation office in the UC on the second floor or by calling 262-472-1175.
