The Tony Award-winning rock opera "Jesus Christ Superstar" is coming to the Young Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 3.
The musical was originally introduced in 1970 by famed writer Andrew Lloyd Webber and Grammy Award winning lyricist Tim Rice and focuses on the interpersonal struggles of Judas and Jesus during the last few weeks of Jesus' life. Its contemporary attitude, slang, political messages and over-the-top production numbers are what made the play famous.
The 2006 revival tour stars Ted Neeley, who played Jesus in the Oscar-winning movie version of the rock opera in 1973. Neeley, who was also a lead in "Hair," has stared in the touring production since the 1990s. This will be Neeley's final tour.
The play also stars Corey Glover, who was the lead singer of the Grammy Award-nominated band, Living Colour.
"Jesus Christ Superstar" begins with Jesus and his followers arriving in Jerusalem and ending with the Crucifixion. Besides an intriguing plot of interpretation of Jesus' life, the score literally rocks. It is considered one of Webber's more aggressive rock pieces. It includes well known hits such as "Superstar" and "I Don't Know How to Love Him." The lead singer on the original album was Ian Gillan, who was later the lead singer of Deep Purple and Black Sabbath.
Leslie LaMuro, marketing director of the Young Auditorium, is looking forward to the extravagant show.
"It is one of the bigger productions coming through," she said. "They have a few semi trucks of equipment coming with them."
The Troika Broadway Co., based in Maryland, is sponsoring the two-hour production, which started in September and will be stopping at 120 venues. The company has previously stopped in Whitewater with its revival of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat."
LaMuro is a big fan of "Jesus Christ Superstar."
"It is one of the all-time great musicals," LaMuro said. "Jesus' last days are worth seeing, even if you aren't religious."
Tickets for the show are on sale now and can be purchased over the phone at 262-473-2222, online at tickets.uww.edu or at the Young Auditorium Box Office.
