The UW-Whitewater men's tennis team opened the second semester with a bang, defeating St. John's University 8-1 on Saturday.
"St. John's is a very good team, and we played really well," Head Coach Frank Barnes said.
Sophomore Robin Borg led the 'Hawks in both singles and doubles. He triumphed in singles, defeating his opponent 6-1, 6-0. Junior Alex Lowe added to the success, beating his opponent 6-3, 6-2.
"My opponent was better than I thought he would be, and played really well for a while," Lowe said.
Borg and Lowe won their doubles match 8-3, proving that the Warhawks are truly going to be a challenge for any team to beat.
"We tried a bunch of different doubles combinations, [and] we saw some good doubles play," Barnes said.
Also leading the way was freshman Gianandrea Heyer, who defeated his opponent 7-5, 7-5. Senior John Reed won in a nail-biter of 7-6, (7-4), 6-4.
"Heyer and Reed had very close wins," Barnes said. "It proved that they are mentally tough."
Although the Warhawks seem untouchable, they fell to UW-Madison Sunday. The 'Hawks played the nationally ranked Division I Badgers for the first time since 1982.
Although the Warhawks lost 0-7, the Badgers had to put up a real fight to win.
"The score doesn't indicate how well we played," Barnes said. "We held our own against Madison."
Borg made his opponent work hard before he fell 6-4, 6-4. Sophomore Danny Glinert also lost a close match 6-3, 6-2.
"Our three new guys really stepped up against Madison," Barnes said. "Danny Glinert, Gianandrea Heyer, and Tim Moller showed that they have what it takes to help us add to the team."
UW-Whitewater will try to improve on its record Saturday, as the team hosts Wheaton College in the Warhawk Invitational. Barnes said his team has a lot to look forward to this year.
"Our goal is to do better this season than we did last season, which is tough to do," he said. "Last season was the best season we've ever had. We hope to make it to the Final 8 this year. It looks like we're ready for a good season."
