The UW-Whitewater women's basketball team wrapped up game two of a three game road trip with a convincing win over the unranked UW-Superior Yellowjackets, 92-41, Saturday night at Gates Gym in Superior, Wis.
The 'Hawks opened up the game with a 21-2 run and went into the half with a 61-17 lead, leaving little doubt as to the outcome of the match.
Leading the way was a stingy Warhawk defense that forced 30 Yellowjacket turnovers. UW-Whitewater also put together a stellar offensive performance, shooting 58% from the floor.
Sophomore forward Nicole Bundy led the team with a game high of 13 points, while four other players reached double figures as well. Sophomore center Dana Thomspson scored 12, while senior center Lindsey Buechner, junior center Tiffany Morton and junior forward Meghan Schmidt each contributed ten points.
The Yellowjackets were led by freshman center Gigi Hudson with ten points. Junior center Amanda Rounsville tacked on nine points while both players grabbed seven rebounds a piece.
The 'Hawks are ranked No. 3 in the nation in Division III and improved to 17-1 overall and 7-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with the win Saturday evening.
UW- Whitewater will round out its three game road trip this Wednesday evening at UW-La Crosse in the Mitchell Hall Gymnasium. The Eagles will try to get back on track against the 'Hawks after a three game win streak was snapped by UW-Eau Claire Saturday afternoon at Zorn Arena in Eau Claire, Wis.
The Warhawks will then return home to square off against the UW-Eau Claire Blugolds this Saturday at 3 p.m. for what likely will be a battle for first place. The Blugolds, ranked 25th by D3hoops.com, are 15-3 overall and 9-0 in conference while the Warhawks are 17-1 overall and 8-1 in conference. UW-Whitewater will be looking to avenge its only loss of the season to the Blugolds.
