Following a tough loss to UW-Platteville on Jan. 23, the Warhawk men's basketball team was able to bounce back Saturday with a 86-55 defeat of UW-Superior.

Coming off of a 73-79 loss to the UW-Platteville Pioneers, UW-Whitewater quickly returned to its winning ways in the Clough Gates Fieldhouse at UW-Superior. Junior guard Matt Goodwin led the 'Hawks, as he scored 26 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Junior Myles McKay tacked on 20 points and seven rebounds, while junior forward Kori Vernon added a double-double effort, compiling 13 points and 15 rebounds.

Although the 'Hawks were one man short for Saturday's game, Head Coach Pat Miller was happy with the outcome.

"Josh King was sick, so we were undermanned a little, but we managed to get along well," Miller said. "We rebounded extremely well and were able to get to the foul line 48 times to their 11."

Along with UW-Platteville and UW-Oshkosh, the 'Hawks are tied for first place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Additionally, the 'Hawks are ranked No. 6 in the D3hoops.com poll, with a 7-2 record in conference and a 14-3 mark overall.

Miller is looking for fan support this week as the 'Hawks will host two crucial WIAC match-ups in the Kachel Gymnasium.

"They are important games. We hope to have a good crowd," Miller said. "We have two home games in a row coming up and are hoping to get the crowd into the game."

One thing that may get the crowd going early would be the play of Goodwin. The junior guard was named UW-Whitewater Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 14-20, after a career night against the UW-Stout Blue Devils. In the game against UW-Stout on Jan. 19, Goodwin shot 7-of-8 from the 3-point line and totaled 29 points. Also, his seven 3-pointers against the Blue Devils are tied for sixth place in school history.

Goodwin's 87.5 percent shooting also tied the fourth-best performance in school history. The record is shared with two other players, one being Miller, who shot 87.5 percent on Feb. 10, 1989.

UW-Whitewater's homestand will start tonight when it hosts UW-La Crosse at 7 p.m.
