The 43rd district includes Whitewater and parts of the UW-Whitewater campus.
Hixson resigned his position as an advertising professor at UW-Whitewater to take the Assembly seat. Towns is a UW-Whitewater graduate.
"I have enjoyed my time in office but I'm in the minority," Hixson said. "We have only met 20 times and it's really frustrating to be in the legislature. Nothing is getting done."
Hixson said one of the main issues this year is the cost of health care.
"Health care shouldn't be denied to people who aren't covered by their job," Hixson said.
Hixson said education is also a big issue. He said school funding and how to properly fund schools are part of that, along with making higher education more accessible and affordable.
Hixson said he is looking for a way to attract businesses to the 43rd district while trying to keep business owners here to help create revenue and jobs.
Hixson said so far during his stay in office he has worked hard on a number of issues such as preventing budget cuts for higher education grants and providing senior health care.
While previously in office, Towns served as a member of numerous committees and as the chairperson for the State Assembly's Education Committee.
"Serving the people in this district is a great honor … I think I did a better job," Towns said.
Towns said if elected she would take a more active role with problems within the district and state.
"I will work to ease tax burdens, make health care more affordable and higher education more affordable … those are the priorities Wisconsin has," Towns said.
