The Whitewater Common Council District 4 seat will be on the ballot for the primary elections Feb. 19, but Jim Fischer, one of the candidates, is no longer running.

However, it is too late to remove Fischer's name from the ballot. He said he will be teaching accounting at UW-Milwaukee in fall 2008 on Tuesday evenings, the same night as Common Council.

Fischer thanked those who offered him their support and encouraged voters to select from the remaining two candidates.

Lynn Binnie and Dane Checolinski are the two remaining candidates. The two candidates with the highest number of votes will go on to the general election April 1. Also running unopposed in that election are Jim Stewart, running for council member at large, and UW-Whitewater student Maxwell Taylor, running from District 2. Stewart and Taylor currently hold seats on the Common Council.

Binnie said his first priority is the preservation of the desirable character of Whitewater.

"We've felt safe and secure, up until a recent scare due to vandalism and burglary," Binnie said. "Our residences are well-maintained. Generally, there is a friendly and neighborly feeling in Whitewater. I don't oppose growth, but I want to maintain what's good about this district."

Binnie said he wants to continue to provide city services while maintaining a moderate tax rate. He also said he wants to see Whitewater retain and attract business.

"The growth of employment would be good for the retail sector, the schools, and the housing market," Binnie said.

Currently Binnie is part of University Ministries at the First Methodist Church in Whitewater, which offers a weekly free lunch to the students.

"It's a really nice way of trying to bridge the gap between the students and the community," Binnie said.

Currently, he is administrator of operations at Fairhaven Senior Services, where he has been for almost 10 years.

Dane Checolinski, currently a senior at UW-Whitewater pursuing a degree in public policy and administration and also a member of UW-Whitewater's Student Government, said his first priority is housing. Checolinski resigned his role as speaker of WSG last semester bur continues to be a WSG senator.
