"Night" by Christina West sits at the front of the gallery, making it one of the most noticable pieces.

The Crossman Gallery has opened with a massive collection of contemporary ceramic art.

This year's exhibit is titled "A New Breed" and features 16 artists from across the country showing their different ceramic pieces from traditional to abstract.

"Night," a piece by artist Christina West, was the first piece everyone noticed upon walking into the exhibit at its opening. This piece is a 3-foot upper-body bust of a man with a towel around his head and painted dark blue.

Sophomore Max Taylor viewed the exhibit the first day it opened.

"I think some of [the pieces in the gallery] are very neat," Taylor said. "Most are very surreal, but hold their own human qualities."

Gallery Director Michael Flanagan and Assistant Professor of Art Jared Janovec have been planning this exhibit since the end of last year. This year's show displays the works of emerging and mid-career artists.

"I wanted this year's exhibition to show how younger generations are the inventors and will be the ones to change the art soon," Janovec said. "I have a real personal enjoyment for this form of art. I want to be able to look at a piece and have to try to figure out how it was made and why they made it." The show runs Jan. 24 to Feb. 16.
