A buck and a half a small price to retain free lunch
Letter to the editor
Issue date: 1/23/08 Section: Opinion
Ashley Schultz's letter to the editor in the Dec. 12, 2007 issue of the Royal Purple is a great example of the "Me Generation."
I have found that civic service organizations like Kiwanis and Lions Club are losing membership due to very few young people wanting to serve their community because there is nothing in it for them. It is good to see United Methodist Ministry providing a service to the community, and for the university to ask for $1.50 per student to keep the program going is small when you consider that my property taxes increased more than 27 percent this year to a whopping sum of $3,894 - this amount does not include the money I pay in federal taxes.
Those thousands of dollars I pay in taxes go to provide for such things as the great education that Schultz is receiving. Did I benefit from it? Did I benefit from the $16,000 Rep. Nancy Pelosi spent of taxpayers' money for flowers for the U.S. Capitol Building? Many students say they do not want to pay for something they will never use, and they know their tuition goes toward many things they never use. So why add one more thing? I guess those who agree with that statement agree that President Bush did the right thing in vetoing the recent SCHIP legislation, because why should I have to pay for health care I will never use? Merry Christmas and enjoy your $1.50.

WSG not funding this program has nothing to do with the lack of people willing to serve in community programs. It reflects the unwillingness of WSG to spend our student fees on something so completely irrelevant to the campus mission. (Continued…)
