Judge David T. Flanagan of Dane County Circuit Court found a factual basis for the charge and that Young did, on June 27, 2007, "cause the death of Paula B. Poorman" by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle.
In exchange for the no contest plea, the second charge of first-degree reckless homicide was dropped, but Flanagan said that he would consider both charges when considering a sentence. Sentencing is set for March.
According to a criminal complaint filed Sept. 27, 2007, Young admitted drinking one pint of Hennessey cognac, a little vodka, and using one line of cocaine before driving on June 27. Witnesses to the crash estimated that Young was driving at speeds up to 120 mph.
Young has been held in the Dane County jail since Dec. 21. Her bail was revoked last Wednesday.
A Dec. 18, 2007 memo from Julie Beyler, lead worker for the Alternatives to Incarceration program, recommended that Young be terminated from the bail monitoring program because a sobrietor test given to Young in early December tested positive for a blood alcohol content level of .011.
Cash bail had been reduced from $20,000 to $5,000 when Young was accepted into the bail monitoring program. Upon termination from that program cash bail of $20,000 was reinstated. Bail was not posted, and Young turned herself in voluntarily on Dec. 21.
