Students will officially be welcomed back to the University Center on Saturday during the grand opening event, UC Live.
UC Live will include several events throughout the building. University Center Executive Director Kim Adams said there will be a lot to see in the new building.
"Students haven't had one big area where they could hang out for the last two years," she said. "I think I am most excited to see student activity in the building again."
Adams said a lot of student input was used when planning for the event.
UC Live kicks off at 4 p.m. Saturday with free bowling and billiards in the Rec Center. Students can bowl against the women's bowling team. Bowling will be offered until midnight. From 4:30-10:30 p.m., students can create mosaic sun catchers in the new Fiskum Art Gallery.
At 5:30 p.m., a murder mystery dinner theater will be presented in the Old Main Ballroom. The show, "Curse of Black Skull Island," is presented by Royal Oak Productions, a Whitewater-based group. Career and Leadership Development Student Service Manager Jan Bilgen said the theater is in collaboration with Chartwells, who is preparing the dinner. The cost of the event is $10 for UW-Whitewater students and $15 for non-students. Tickets must be purchased before the show by calling 262-472-2222.
"It's an unbelievably great deal for the students because of the generosity of Chartwells," Bilgen said.
At 7 and 10 p.m., a free screening of "Superbad" will be shown in the new Summers Auditorium. Athletic trivia run by Warhawk coaches and athletes will be held from 8-10 p.m. in the Schaffer Commons.
A casino room complete with blackjack, bingo, roulette and poker will be run from 7-10 p.m. in the Hamilton Center. Bilgen said all dealers are from the university and community.
"We're not fostering gambling, we're fostering community building," she said.
At 8 p.m., comedian Issac Witty will take the stage in the Down Under. Witty has been featured on Comedy Central and had positive reviews the first time he visited the university, Bilgen said. Right after Witty's show, stick around for karaoke starting at 9 p.m.
Several door prizes will be given away throughout the night. These prices include 500 UC Live t-shirts, a Nintendo Wii, a Sony Playstation, iPods, Visa gift cards, Purple Points cards, Warhawk sports apparel and autographed Green Bay Packers merchandise. Many of the offices throughout the building will also offer prizes.
Adams said she is hoping for a large turnout at the event.
"We really hope to see a lot of the students at the events because this is your building; it's a student building," she said. "We say 'welcome back,' come on over and have a good time at UC Live."
