The UW-Whitewater women's swimming and diving team defeated Lake Forest College, 144-82,and placed fourth at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Relays in La Crosse Saturday.

"We have some better athletes than [Lake Forest does]," said Head Coach Joel Rollings. "They have some very good swimmers, but they don't have the numbers that we do."

Although the 'Hawks cruised past the Lake Forest Foresters at its meet Friday, winning by 62 points, the match was very close. The Warhawks beat the Foresters mostly by sheer numbers. Rollings described both sides as very talented, but Lake Forest couldn't match the quantity of quality swimmers UW-Whitewater has.

"They did well; we have some real competitors on our team," Rollings said. "Our divers are very strong. We have a very good amount of depth."

The Warhawks took first place in all but five of the 14 competitions. The 'Hawks biggest margin of victory came in the 200-meter medley and 200-meter freestyle relay. UW-Whitewater's A and B relay teams both beat the Lake Forest A teams in both 200-meter relays.

The 'Hawks faced much stiffer competition at the WIAC Relays, finishing fourth out of six teams. Powerhouses UW-La Crosse and UW-Stevens Point took first and second, respectively.

Rollings said his team was unfazed by the pressure and knew what kind of teams they'd be up against in the conference.

"The teams that we faced in the WIAC were some of the top teams in the country," Rollings said. "The main thing was we're just trying to train for the end of the season. Our team knows what they're in for."

Rollings realizes that his team is just figuring out its potential. With a little time and patience they could be a team to beat in the conference.

"I would like to be a little closer up to third [place]," he said. "Bu t we're an emerging team, and we've got a great freshmen class and sophomore class."

The Warhawks get some time off for Thanksgiving and will face the Marquette Swim Club on Friday, Nov. 30.
