'Hawks finish fourth amid stiff competition at Maroon Invite

The Sprint Invite at Lawrence University and the UW-Oshkosh Invite set the stage for two grueling days in Chicago, where the men's and women's swimming and diving teams battled some of the top teams in Division III at the Maroon Invite.

The invite featured nine teams from the Midwest region, with the Warhawks taking home fourth place finishes in both the men's and women's invites. The men tallied 410 points, while the women totaled 549, but both finished well behind the eventual first and second place teams, Washington University (Mo.) and Chicago University. Kalamazoo College (Mi.) finished in third place in both the men's and women's invites, while placing a 200 point gap between the 'Hawks.

Head Coach Joel Rollings said the invite was a great mental and physical test for his teams, with the 'Hawks entering the home stretch on its November road swing.

"It was a very solid meet, as many of the teams we competed against were stronger than a majority of the WIAC teams," Rollings said. Kalamazoo was similar to Luther, who is a little more experienced then we are, but Chicago and Washington were on a much different level than us."

Even though the men's and women's teams did not finish in the top three, many UW-Whitewater athletes still managed to turn in solid performances.

Two of those individuals were senior diver Kyle Boers and freshman Andy Hanney. Boers placed first in both the three meter and the one meter dives, and earned 40 team points for the 'Hawks. Hanney continued to dominate in the 200-yard backstroke event, placing first in the 12 man race. Hanney also posted two other top ten finishes at the invite.

Junior captain Alex Kultgen, who had a top ten finish in the 200-yard backstroke race, praised team members for their effort at the meet.

"Boers did an outstanding job, and our depth is really showing on the boards this season," Kultgen said. "We have outstanding freshman, particularly Hanney and Matt Mintz who have taken some of the pressure off the upperclassman by having great meets."
