Juniata College dominated the Warhawks twice during the season, but Saturday's night Final Four matchup between the two was a entirely different story.
he Warhawks went into the National Collegiate Athletic Association semifinal and got revenge on the Eagles by sweeping them at Illinois Wesleyan University's Shirk Center Friday night.
"They really fought hard, they really wanted it," said Head Coach Stacy Boudreau. "The last couple of times we played them, we really could sense that we could compete with this team. We just kind of made a lot of mistakes, and tonight we eliminated our mistakes…[we] played with a lot of passion and a lot of fire, and were able to get the victory."
The 'Hawks started off on the right foot, scoring the opening point of game one. The team nearly dropped the game after being down 28-26, but a 4-0 run by the 'Hawks put them ahead early.
"A team like Juniata…you can't dig yourself into a hole," Boudreau said. "We were going to keep the scorer tighter, and at the end we knew that our girls can finish."
The points scored in game two went back-and-forth between the two teams, but Kate Lazotte's kill helped the 'Hawks go ahead two games to none with a ending score of 30-28.
The Eagles started off game three with a 5-1 run, but the 'Hawks cruised back to knot the game at 6-6. Once the Warhawks got up 12-11, they were able to run away as the Eagles failed to climb back. Game three ended 30-25.
The trio of seniors - Abby Schultz, Sarah Theis and Carley Polk - led the Warhawks by combining for 37 kills, while Kate Lazotte aided most of those with 44 assists.
"I knew we all had confidence," Polk said. "I never had any doubt in my mind about [losing]."
The Eagles beat the Warhawks 3-0 on Sept. 15 and 3-1 on Oct. 12, but were unable to outplay UW-Whitewater at the big stage.
"For us to get this victory against Juniata is huge," said Boudreau. "It's hard to beat a team three times, [and] we both knew what the other team was going to do. I'm just really proud of how my team came out and executed."
The Warhawks will try to win its second title in three years, as they face Washington University (Mo.) in the NCAA Division III Championship Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Shirk Center in Bloomington, Ill. The 'Hawks beat Washington 3-1 earlier at the Teri Clemens Invitational earlier this season.
