Seven members of the Warhawk wrestling team traveled to UW-Stevens Point Saturday to participate in the Point Invite.

Although no team scores were calculated and five of the seven wrestlers who represented the Warhawks were freshmen, valuable experience was gained leading into the season.

Freshman Alex Dahl, from Cashton, led the 'Hawks with a 4-1 record, recording two pins to finish third in the 133-pound weight class. Head Coach Tim Fader said Dahl was "fairly dominant" in his matches, as his only loss came to the eventual champion.

Fellow freshman Max Oldenburg, a Chicago native, posted a 3-2 record in the 125-pound weight class. Another freshman, Casey Powell, finished 3-3 and recorded a pin at 125 pounds.

"The college level is definitely a different experience," Dahl said. "It was nice to get off to a good start, and I hope I can keep the momentum going into the season."

Oldenburg agreed with Dahl, saying the college level has a "much higher intensity" compared to high school. Oldenburg also believes the 'Hawks have a good team this year.

"I think our freshmen class is very solid, and we have big expectations for the upcoming season," Oldenburg said.

Adam Latella, a sophomore from Rockton, Ill., went 2-2 competing in the heavyweight division. David Becker, also a sophomore, finished with one victory, which came from a pin in the 141-pound class. The final two wrestlers for the 'Hawks were Cory Ryan and Kyle Geary, both freshmen. Ryan recorded two pins and finished with a 3-2 record in the 149-pound class, while Geary posted a 1-2 record in his first collegiate competition in the 165-pound class.

"This was a good opener, everyone made weight and our freshmen gained valuable experience," Fader said. "I don't really get caught up in all the results but it was nice to see them compete, and I liked the fact that everyone won at least one match.

"I think our freshmen will be very exciting to watch this year," Fader added.

The Warhawks will travel to Concordia University on Nov. 17 to partake in another open event starting at 9 a.m.
