The UW-Whitewater women's bowling team started off its season at the Cheeseland Classic Tournament in Fort Atkinson. The Warhawks came in eighth place with a total pinfall of 10,705. The University of Nebraska won the tournament with a total of 11,841.
Seniors Kim Ashby and Katie Saffold led the 'Hawks in its only home competition of the 2007-08 season. Ashby finished in 15th place with an average of 181, and Saffold finished in 25th with an average of 171.
"Considering it was our first competition, it was decent. We're definitely looking to improve, but it was a good start. It was a huge learning experience for them," Head Coach Amber Griffin said.
In addition to the competition being the 'Hawks first one of the season, the team also had to face off against a field full of tough opponents. However, Saffold was happy with the team's performance.
"It was a tough shot, there were a lot of really good bowling schools at the tournament. I think we did pretty well considering we have a lot of new girls on the team," Saffold said.
While the team is very young this year, the new girls are already proving themselves.
"Freshman Heather Kowalski needed a strike in the ninth frame to keep us in the game, and she got it. We were very proud of her, she stepped up," Saffold said.
With all of this new talent on the team, the 'Hawks have set its goals high this year.
"We made team goals to finish in the top two of at least one tournament this year, and to get to nationals. I think we have a lot to improve on, but our goals are reachable," Griffin said.
"We want to make it to nationals. In the past two years we've been very close but we just barely missed it. We have new talent, and we're going to strive for nationals," Saffold said.
