The Illinois Invite was a tough road for the Warhawks wheelchair basketball team, but the team continued its hot streak, going 3-0 Saturday to improve their record to 7-0 this season.
The 'Hawks defeated the Variety Village Rebels in its first of three games, 92-67, with a great performance by junior Matt Scott, who led the team with 30 points on 12-for-19 shooting from the floor. He also dished out six helpers and stole the ball five times. Sophomore Joe Chambers recorded a double-double of 26 points and 13 boards against the Rebels.
The 'Hawks went to overtime to defeat the Milwaukee Bucks wheelchair team, 77-71. Both Scott and Chambers recorded a double-double in their second win of the day. Scott scored 12 points and grabbed 11 boards, while Chambers scored 13 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. The player of the game was senior Jaime Mazzi, who scored 25 points, including 5-for-16 from downtown.
The 'Hawks finish the invite winning 68-59 against the University of Illinois Fighting Illini. Mazzi led the team with 20 points, while making 6-for-13 from downtown. Senior Jeremy Campbell had an impressive game with 18 points and seven assists in the win.
Head Coach Tracy Chynoweth was impressed of the contributions from his role players in the Illinois Invite.
"This was a great weekend for us as we saw some strong play we didn't need last weekend," Chynoweth said. "We needed it this weekend, and we got it from freshman Allon Dor-Onn and sophomore Matt Lesperance. We also got some great contributions from freshman Chris Okon and we'll need more from him as the year goes on."
Scott was thrilled from the contributions of his teammates as well.
"Overall, I think our team showed a lot of heart this weekend," Scott said. "We were faced with a lot of adversity and overcame it like a truly great team. We got huge contributions from everyone, and will need that same effort all year to accomplish our goal of repeating as champions."
Coach Chynoweth expects his team to focus for the team first home tournament of the year.
"I expect our team to work very hard from now so we can put on a good show in front of our home fans," Chynoweth said. "We have some things to work on that jumped out at us this past weekend, and I have no doubt we'll turn these things into strengths by Nov. 30. We played some good teams but we are focused internally of taking care of business when we play at home."
The Warhawks' next games will be at home, as the team hosts a tournament Nov. 30-Dec. 1.
