Senior Jeff Derer tries to go around two Dominican University players in the Warhawks' 1-0 loss Saturday. The 'Hawks finished the season at 15-3-2.

The Warhawk men's soccer team fell to the Dominican University Stars, 1-0, in the first round of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III Tournament Saturday at Fiskum Field.

"The kids work hard and that's a staple I believe in, hard work," Head Coach Greg Henschel said. "I try to model that and work hard myself. And obviously things didn't go our way this year."

Both teams put up great defensive battles in a very close match. The Warhawks had eight shots on the goal to Dominican University's 15. UW-Whitewater goalie EJ Sesselmann was kept busy by Dominican University's offense, recording seven saves to the Stars' two.

The game was a very close one with the first and only score coming with just 2:22 left in the match. The Stars' Matt Kochanowski scored the point after he intercepted a pass close to the Whitewater goal.

The goal was set up by a red card to the 'Hawks Brett Acree with 7:11 left in the game. With Acree receiving a red card, he was ejected from the game and the Warhawks were required to play one man down for the rest of the game.

Henschel was very upset by the call and stated that Acree didn't deserve the red card.

"[Acree] hasn't received a red card in two full seasons. I honestly didn't see a penalty there. I just don't think that match was treated fairly," Henschel said.

Henschel is optimistic for next season, citing his continued success and many returning players as a sign of good things to come for next season. Henschel is also excited about the new soccer field with increased seating for next year, and is hoping more fans take the opportunity to enjoy the games.

"We've got a lot of young guys that will be returning next year," Henschel said "I think there's a lot of great soccer to be played next season. I know we're going to have a great environment to play soccer in."

UW-Whitewater ends its season with a 15-3-2 record. The game against Dominican University marked the Warhawks' sixth NCAA Division III tournament bid in seven years.
