UW-Whitewater and Madison Area Technical College made an agreement that allows qualified students who start as freshmen at MATC to transfer to UW-Whitewater with guaranteed admittance on Oct. 26.
According to the UW-Whitewater press release, 14.5 percent of Whitewater's 606 transfer students in 2007 came from MATC.
The new pact has the approval of students who have already been through the process and students who were accepted into UW-Whitewater out of high school.
Some students that transferred from MATC to UW-Whitewater said that the transfer process before the pact was not hard, but the direct transfer process can be beneficial and help others who didn't agree with the ease of the process of switching schools.
"Students really need direction because it is a complicated process," said MATC transfer Sarah Bachmann, a senior double majoring in Education and Sociology. "There are many steps that could be skipped without it."
The pact is UW-Whitewater's first transfer agreement with any school.
Bachmann also said that the direct transfer process will help students get to experience college at MATC without worrying about being accepted into a four-year college right away.
"I was able to experience college without ever leaving my hometown and now I am on my own here," Bachmann, a Verona native, said.
Another MATC transfer student, sophomore Karen Hoffman, said her transfer process was fine but a pact between the two schools would not hurt.
"I am sure it would have been helpful to me," Hoffman said.
UW-Whitewater freshman Natalie Koberstein agreed but she said her process of transferring in the spring of 2007 was painless.
"It was essentially filling out some forms to ensure the transfer of credits and my information." Koberstein said. "At MATC there are specific courses that are labeled transferable to other Wisconsin schools, which makes it easier to pick classes that will automatically transfer to Whitewater."
MATC transfer students already found UW-Whitewater to be an attractive place, as 13 percent of their transfer students in 2007, including Koberstein, chose UW-Whitewater, second to only UW-Madison.
Sarah Bachmann was accepted at UW-Madison but decided against it. She was also accepted at UW-Eau Claire, but decided that UW-Whitewater suited her better.
"Whitewater was closer and it would be more convenient to go back home," Bachmann said.
UW-Whitewater freshman Alex Moule said that he agrees with the direct transfer process and that guaranteed admission doesn't take away spots from others.
"As long as the student is qualified to attend [UW-Whitewater], then I don't have a problem with it," Moule said.
There is no word on when the process will go into effect for MATC students.
