You know you're an adult when you begin to feel old at the ripe age of 21. I realize this sounds ridiculous, especially when this feeling arrives in comparison to someone who shares my year of birth. I happened to catch an episode of Full House the other day on TV, which of course stars America's favorite twins. Ashley and Mary Kate Olsen are only two months older than I am (yes, I do know their birthday), yet I find myself thinking the same thing obnoxious elderly people insist on saying to someone younger whom they haven't seen in quite some time: "I remember when you were yay high," they say as they raise their hand mid-torso.
Ever since Web sites began chronicling the countdown to their 18th birthday, the twins have been the source of enumerable "they're all grown up" discussions by entertainment aficionados and the general public. Like most child stars, the sweet-faced little tykes shed their innocent persona and eventually emerged as sex symbols. And as they grew, so did their bank accounts, reporting an estimated net worth of $150 million each. What can be sexier than that?
However, it seems the older the twins got, the more they appeared to fade from the spotlight. With the exception of Mary Kate's eating disorder, a 2004 hosting gig on SNL, and a flop at the box office ("New York Minute," anybody?) the girls have led relatively private lives away from the cameras. Most recently, I was shocked to hear rumors surrounding Ashley's love life. At the moment, she is supposedly linked to Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong, despite a 15 year age gap.
This news sparked some reflective thought within me. I began thinking about the Olsen twins in comparison to other young stars who capture more headlines for their reckless antics as opposed to their body of successful work. The reason no one has heard much about Ashley and Mary Kate is because they take their careers seriously and don't waste their talents on boozy nights of partying without panties.
