Previously, on-campus housing was available over breaks for an additional cost. The housing was used by some international students.
"When they took White Hall out for administrative purposes … we had to make Goodhue, which is where our guest housing was, into student rooms," Frank Bartlett, associate director for university housing, said. "We have no break housing available."
There are 52 international students currently living in the residence halls, Eshelman said.
"In the end, there are usually two or three students who live on campus during the breaks anyway … from what I've heard," Eshelman said.
The Office of Residence Life's Web site still said the rooms are available as of Tuesday.
"Students may need accommodations during academic break periods and observed holidays," the Web site said. "Residence hall rooms are available during these times at an additional cost. "
Boureima Timbo, a freshman international student from Mali, Africa, was one of the students planning on living in the residence halls over breaks.
"It's not easy to get one months rent in Whitewater," Timbo said. "I just can't understand why they can't have one dorm open."
Timbo said when he was signing his residence hall contract, he was told about the availability of housing during breaks, which was a deciding factor in his living situation.
"If I had been told this before I signed the contract, I would have looked into something else," Timbo said.

I cannot believe that any university would simply put these poor international students out in the cold without providing them with a place to stay during the breaks. (Continued…)

I went to college there a few years ago, and I always thought it was odd that people couldn't stay on campus during the holidays. Do you know how much homework is assigned during the spring breaks? It's impossible to get all of it done at home. (Continued…)

Will make sure international applicants are aware, thanks for this news.

I don't believe the university is doing something cruel to "poor international students". During my time on-campus, I remember options available for those who couldn't have other arrangements. (Continued…)
