The Alpha Sigma dating auction and formal dinner on Nov. 9 will raise money for the American Cancer Society.

The Alpha Sigma sorority works to raise money for breast cancer research and other breast cancer-related causes year-round. Their latest fundraiser is the annual Alpha Auction.

Bids can be placed on Alpha Sigma's Web site at www.alphaauction.sytes.net. The site features 24 eligible ladies, complete with a picture and profile.

Anyone is welcome to bid and win a date. In order to start bidding, students have to create a user name and password within the site. The bidding price starts at $24. Bidding began Oct. 28 and will go until midnight on Nov. 7.

"I look at our sorority like a charity organization," sophomore member Staci Groshek said. "That's the real reason I joined."

The dinner will be at Lake Community Shelter from 6-11 p.m. Girls not participating in the auction will serve and cook at the dinner, Alpha Sigma Philanthropy co-chairman Simone Stewart said. After the dinner, couples can either go their separate ways or continue the night.

"I'm excited because it's our big event for the American Cancer Society," Stewart said. "It's also a chance to dress up and look nice, and it's a really good time."

Girls who already have boyfriends are "bought out," meaning their boyfriends bid on them to take them out of the running, Stewart said. Most of the guys who bid are fraternity members.

According to the Web site, "Alpha Sigma reserves the right to reject any bids, regardless of whether or not you were the highest bid." This is to ensure the comfort and safety of the girls, Stewart said.

"I hope someone creepy doesn't pick me, but I suppose that could make it more fun," Alpha Sigma pledger Kelsey Walsh said.

Highest bidders will be e-mailed by 11 a.m. on Nov. 8. Money must be received at the Alpha Sigma house, 931 W. Main St., by 6 p.m. on Nov. 8.

"It's a lot of fun because you're raising money for something more than yourself," Groshek said.
