Derek Henze and Allison Rygh, members of the Collegiate Entrepreneurs Organization, were named Homecoming king and queen in a week of activities that culminated in Saturday's 26-14 victory over the UW-Oshkosh football team. "To win king and queen is a great honor," Henze said.
The construction on the UW-Whitewater campus that has inconvenienced students for so many months is nearing an end. The James R. Connor University Center is scheduled to be completed by early in the spring semester. "Right now we are continuing to plan to occupy at the beginning of the second semester," said director of Student Affairs, Stephen Summers.
UW-Whitewater senior Gwynne DeBoer spoke at the Plant Biology and Botany Joint Congress in Chicago, a rare honor. DeBoer, who is majoring in honors biology and Spanish, was one of the only undergraduate students allowed to speak with the council. Students rallied together Friday night in the Williams Center to compete for the loudest and the proudest group with the most school spirit in honor of UW-Whitewater's Homecoming's 2007 "Yell Like Hell." Each of the groups came up with their own theme for Homecoming week that they used throughout each of the events.
In a private ceremony Monday night, the family of late UW-Whitewater student Kelly Nolan was presented with an Associate of Arts degree. The closed event, which was attended by Interim Chancellor Richard Telfer and Nolan's close family and friends, honored both Nolan's achievements and her memory.
Last month, the long arm of the Recording Industry Association of America reached out and pointed fingers at UW-Whitewater, again. On Sept. 20 the trade group, which represents the interests of major music companies, sent more letters to universities across the country, including 62 letters to the UW System schools at Eau Claire, Madison, Milwaukee, Stevens Point, Stout and Whitewater.
Twenty-four counselor education students achieved for the first time in Whitewater history a 100 percent pass rate on the National Counselor Exam this past April. The previous pass rate average was about 92 percent, according to UW-Whitewater associate professor of counselor education, Brenda O'Beirne.
The Office of Residence Life has reduced the number of students living in lounges from nearly 200 to about 150 students. Since the beginning of the semester students have been moved to regular rooms as they become available. Progress is being made shifting students from the lounges to regular dorms, Residence Life Director Jeff Janz said.
A two-year study orchestrated by students at the UW-Whitewater recently released its findings showing college students' lack of perception of career opportunities in Wisconsin. The study, which was directed by Productive Knowledge, Inc. of Elm Grove, Wis.
Time capsules from the recently demolished Baker, Salisbury and Sayles halls were opened Friday in a ceremony at the Greenhill Center of the Arts. Baker Hall was first dedicated in 1952. It was named for Lucy Baker who taught vocal music at the school from 1894-1937.
The Topper's Headquarters building will see the addition of a 24-hour fitness center sometime in November. "We are hesitant to declare an opening date at this point because the space is still under construction and problems can always come up toward the end," franchise owner, Melanie Barker, said.
