Former UW-Whitewater standout wide receiver Derek Stanley and tight end Pete Schmitt will not be playing in the 2007-08 National Football League?season.

Despite all the praise Stanley was receiving in early August, the St. Louis Rams waived the 'Hawks all-time leading receiver along with eight other players on?Saturday.

However, being cut from competition is not all bad news for the seventh round draft pick. Just two days after being waived, the Verona product was signed to the Rams practice squad.

The Rams most likely kept the 5-foot-10 inch Stanley and prevented him from signing with other teams because of his incredible quickness. During the NFL preseason, Stanley used his speed to total six catches for 79 yards. He was also used as a running back, and most frequently a kick returner, a position where he had six attempts for 137 yards.

Stanley had 2,621 yards and finished his Warhawk career second in career receptions with 130. His 35 career touchdown receptions is tied for first in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference history.

Former 'Hawks tight end Schmitt, who was undrafted, was waived from injured reserved by the Washington Redskins earlier last week.

The 6-foot-4-inch, 255-pound graduate of Mount Horeb High School suffered a shoulder injury midway through training camp, causing him to miss several days of practice. The Redskins paid Schmitt an injury settlement rather than put him on injured reserve.

The settlement will not allow Schmitt to sign with any other NFL team for the 2007-08 season. Similar to Stanley's situation, his release leaves open a potential return to the Redskins or any other club in 2008.

Schmitt had three catches for 13 yards in the preseason.

During his four-year career at UW-Whitewater, Schmitt had the second most receptions for a Warhawk tight end with 107. Schmitt also had 14 touchdowns and 1,231 yards, in helping the 'Hawks to consecutive undefeated seasons in 2005 and 2006.
