For a quick caffeine fix in an air-conditioned place, residents of Whitewater have three coffee shops to choose from: the SweetSpot Coffee Shoppe, Greenhouse Café and the Travel Café.
All three coffee shops have their own qualities which set them apart from the others.
The newest of Whitewater's coffee shops is the SweetSpot, located at 226 Whitewater St. by the Cravath Lakefront in the formerly abandoned Whitewater Hotel.
The SweetSpot opened June 17, 2006, and is managed by a pair of sisters, Linda and Lori Platner. Their three daughters also work at the coffee shop.
Linda Platner said she has a passion for coffee, and her goal is to establishing the SweetSpot as a cozy place where people can go to relax.
"I really believe the coffee shop is about community and getting people together and giving them a [comfortable place]," she said. "You have work, you have home; it's someplace else where you can go and feel comfortable and relax."
The SweetSpot uses Ancora brand coffee, from a local company. Within 24 hours of being roasted in Madison, the coffee is sent to Whitewater. Platner emphasized the SweetSpot's goal of area based businesses for their food and coffee.
"We try to focus on local or at least Wisconsin produced products as much as we can," Platner said.
The coffee shop also features several snack options including gelato. The SweetSpot is the only shop in town currently selling the Italian iced treat. They will also begin selling Wisconsin wine and beer within the next month, according to Platner.
Greenhouse Café is named for its unusual set up. The coffee shop opened in November 2004 in a former flower greenhouse.
The greenhouse is used for the store to sell roses and other flowers alongside the coffee.
Owner Vicki Fielder said she discovered her own passion for coffee while in college. When purchasing coffee, Fiedler said she focuses on buying the best tasting coffee from around the world including Indonesia, Honduras and Guatemala.
