As Gov. Jim Doyle continues his fight in legislature for smoke-free Wisconsin public areas, local bar and restaurant owners weigh in on how it may affect their businesses.
Actors Tate Donovan and Kerry Washington, joined state Rep. Kim Hixson and Gov. Jim Doyle's sons, visited the UW-Whitewater campus Saturday afternoon in support of Sen. Barack Obama for the Democratic nomination in Wisconsin's presidential primary.
In the democratic presidential primary balloting, early exit polling showed Illinois Sen. Barack Obama outdistancing rival New York Sen. Hillary Clinton by almost a 3-1 margin at the Hamilton Center.
At the Old Armory downtown, balloting was more balanced between Obama and Clinton. Between about 8:30-9:30, exit polling showed 55 percent of voters chose Obama, while 35 percent chose Clinton. McCain received 7.8 percent. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee received little support from early voters.
According to each candidate's campaign party, the Democratic race is still close between Barack Obama and Hilary Clinton. John McCain is leading the Republican vote, but former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee is still in the race as of Tuesday morning.
Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-New York, said Feb. 18 in Madison she was the only candidate, Democrat or Republican, with a proposal for universal health care. "Universal health care is a fundamental, progressive value, and we're not going to give up until we have it," Clinton said.
University officials stopped Pilgrims Covenant Church from distributing anti-homosexuality brochures on campus Jan. 31, but not before many students received them.
Sub Zero temperatures and record snowfalls continued to plague Whitewater during the first part of February. As of Tuesday, 77.3 inches of snow entered the history books replacing the 1979 record of 76.1 inches.
A student living in the residence halls tested positive for tuberculosis last week and was treated and released from an area hospital. The student is in isolation and will not return to campus until he or she is medically cleared of all symptoms.
While the university bookstore is being remodeled, new locations have opened in Esker and Drumlin halls. The bookstore in Moraine Hall closed its doors Feb. 4 to undergo renovations.
An issue near and dear to many students was addressed at the Whitewater Common Council meeting Tuesday: parking.
The city of Whitewater will widen Whitewater Street by removing one of the curbs and installing diagonal parking along one side of the road, increasing the number of parking spaces. The city has set aside approximately $70,000 in this year's budget for the project.
Whitewater Student Government recently passed a piece of legislation to change fall commencement ceremonies.
The Hawk's Nest Bar and Grill will soon open at 214 Whitewater St., formerly the Longbranch Saloon.
