The Warhawk men's and women's cross country teams will get a chance to build upon their first two outings Friday when they travel to Kenosha to participate in the Carthage College Cross Country Invite.
The men run at 2:30 p.m., and the women's race begins at 3:15 p.m.
Last weekend, both teams traveled to St. Paul, Minn., for the Roy Griak Invitational hosted by the University of Minnesota. Two season-best times were logged by sophomore Dan Machmueller and junior Katie McCabe.
On a great day for running, Machmueller finished 30th in a field of 307 runners. Machmueller's time of 26:34 was his best performance of the season, beating his previous best time of 28:07.
"The conditions were perfect," Machmueller said. "That had a lot to do with my time."
As a team, the men finished 10th of 31. UW-La Crosse claimed first place, and junior Dan Greeno of Bethel University claimed first individually with a 25:22.
"Our goal was to kind of get out and control pace and then move up throughout the field," 'Hawks coach Jeff Miller said. "Most of our runners improved their position throughout the race."
Machmueller said some of the younger runners are beginning to turn their potential into production.
"I think we're going to get a lot better," Machmueller said. "We should be a lot better team by the conference meet."
Sophomore Mathias Werve also had a strong showing, running a season-best time of 26:58 and finishing in 43rd place. Other strong outings came from freshman Jeremie Bogard (27:30), and seniors Lee Stratman (27:08) and Chris Knutson (27:21).
McCabe led the lady 'Hawks for the second straight competition with a 23:44. She finished 27th of 497 runners.
"She's kind of stepped up and has been our top runner in these first two meets," Miller said. "She's running at a pretty high level in our conference."
Out of a field of 36, the lady 'Hawks finished in 20th place. Other notable placements came from juniors Jackie Nett (25:03, 112th place) and Jen Taylor (25:13, 120th), both of whom finished with season-best times.
