Critics Corner: 'Hancock'

Superhero movies have become a pretty big thing in Hollywood. Everyone has a favorite superhero and people love to see them on the silver screen. The only problem is, most of these movies suck. But when someone has the great idea to make up a superhero with real world problems, you would think it might turn out pretty well. Or it may just fall flat on its face.
Meet Hancock (Will Smith), an alcoholic low life who also happens to be a super hero. Saving the day usually means wrecking a few city blocks, but he's loveable and seems troubled by his powers. He meets a publicist (Jason Bateman) who wants to change his image, but his wife (Charlize Theron) and Hancock have a dark history. Cue the dramatic music
Honestly, this could have been a great movie. It's a good idea and story and even has some very funny moments, but people go to superhero movies to see famous characters the world loves. Making one up and trying to prop them up just doesn't work as well.
