My colleagues are right, but the issue is more complex. Many faculty members leave because of the heavy teaching loads at Whitewater and other second tier institutions. Tenure and tenure track faculty members usually teach 4 classes per semester, while academic staff teach five classes per semester, and they are expected to do research. Some faculty members remain at Whitewater, even though they would prefer to be elsewhere, due to family obligations and the close proximity to Madison. We would be in serious trouble if we were not so close to Madison! So you want to keep more of the faculty here and replace faculty members nearing retirement age, reduce teaching loads. Money will help but it is not the main issue!
