Members of UW-Whitewater’s American Marketing Association chapter are doing their part to help conserve water.

Dana Aschaker, Troy Fredrick, Mike Lippold and Laura Zakos submitted a proposal to a collegiate water-conservation marketing competition sponsored by Kohler and ranked in the top three teams.

The team’s event is scheduled for Earth Day, April 22, and will feature guest speakers, a career corner, informational booths, a Kohler display with working products and entertainment.

“We have a lot of community sponsors and partnerships involved and hope to gain more as we go along,” Zakos said.

The challenge was open to all universities and consisted of writing a proposal for a water conservation and awareness event to take place on their campus. A Kohler representative will attend the top three school’s events and offer 40 percent off Kohler water-efficient products the day of the event.

Of the 25 submitted proposals, UW-Whitewater along with Penn State and Pennsylvania University were chosen.

Zakos said her team wanted to target both the educational and sales emphasis of the competition.

“We are contacting surrounding area high schools and elementary schools to attend the event,” she said. “We are going to local landlords, contractors, plumbers to gain attention and attract them to come to the event to highlight what they do as far as conservation is concerned and also to see how they can learn more.”

Zakos said earning this recognition is a big step for UW-Whitewater.

“By being ranked in the top three along with two extremely large and powerful universities, it really shows that UW-Whitewater's academic curriculum rivals some of the best programs in the country,” she said. “We're going to do everything we can to win this competition. The best part about this competition is that it's really going to raise awareness of water conservation on campus and within our community.”

After the events are held, Kohler will rank the schools. First place winner of the competition receives $10,000 of Kohler water-efficient products for a building on campus, Second place gets $7,500 of water-efficient products and third place receives $5,000 worth of products.
