A City of Whitewater police detective has been recognized for her work with sexual assault cases and crimes against children. Sgt. Tina Winger received a merit award from the Wisconsin Association of Women Police on Oct. 19. Winger is the commander of the Sensitive Crimes team, which investigates sexual assaults and crimes against children. Also, she leads the Internet Crimes Against Children Program. "The work with investigating Sensitive Crimes is very stressful and time consuming, so to be recognized with this award is very satisfying," Winger said. City of Whitewater Police Chief James Coan nominated Winger for the award. "We are very proud of Sgt. Winger for this award, and the professionalism that she has shown has been greatly acknowledged by everyone in this department," Coan said. Winger said members of the task force deserve credit, also. "I cannot take all of the credit, as I have an exceptional group of officers who are committed to the team and the investigations we are associated with," Winger said. Coan said the department has performed well and this award helps that image. "We believe we have exemplified great professionalism within our department and this award has increased that perception," he said.
