The UW-System updated the Student Nonacademic Disciplinary violations, which took effect Sept. 1. Students can be punished by their university for violations of this rule, even if the violation occurs off-campus. The updates to Chapters 17 and 18 are an expansion of the old list, and list specific actions students can be disciplined for. The old version of the policies had eight violations, the new version has 16. Chapter 17 is a set of actions UW-System students are prohibited to do, and Chapter 18 is for anyone who visits a UW-System campus. "The new policy specifically lists things like sexual assault, hazing and misuse of university computers that weren't listed in the old version, but that doesn't mean the university wouldn't have taken action if a student did one of these actions," said Dean of Student Life and First Year Experience Mary Beth Mackin. "The new version of Chapters 17 and 18 just expands on the old version." The revision was brought up in response to complaints by residents who live around the UW-Milwaukee campus that students were disruptive. The residents complained to the school that the students were theirs, so they needed to take care of the issue. A Web site forum was established for both UW-Milwaukee and the community to voice their opinions and solutions. "I think its fair," sophomore Dustin Tilsner said. "If the crime is serious enough, then the university should be able to take disciplinary action." If the student's action is extreme enough, the student may be expelled from the UW-System. "Expulsion is obviously not the first action the university would take," Mackin said. "We want students to learn from their mistakes and help them with the big picture." Mackin said violations of the Student Nonacademic Policy will affect the student in the long run. "Its more that writing an essay or doing community service, [the record of a violation] can affect the student transferring schools, getting into graduate school, internships and employment."
